COLUMBIA — Many industries like malls and airlines took a hit during the pandemic, but there’s one still thriving.
Despite the pandemic, one local plastic surgeon said he found the steady business of the cosmetic surgery industry “surprisingly busy.”
Matthew Concannon, the owner of Concannon Plastic Surgery in Columbia, said Monday the demand for cosmetic enhancements during the pandemic shutdown means that now, an influx of people are coming through his practice doors.
“Injections, fillers, botox – those people were clamoring the loudest in April to get back,” Concannon said.
Concannon said he also performs hand surgeries and remained open during the shutdown to take care of injured essential workers.
Concannon’s appointment books have been full to the brim with cosmetic patients booking appointments way in advance.
“At my practice we just took names, we put people on a waiting list.. and now we’re seeing them so there’s a steady stream of people that are coming through,” Concannon said.
Though business is steady, there was another difference compared to 2019 Concannon said he and his surgeon friends notice.
“We’re all busy enough with our stuff, it’s definitely slower,” Concannon explained.
However much surprising even Concannon is by the demand for cosmetic enhancements during a pandemic and the stresses that come with it, he said he understands why the enhancements he does mean a lot to his patients.
“The things that we can do – whether it’s breast enhancement or what not – this is something that makes someone feel better 24/7, 365,” Concannon said.
